To those of you who have been puzzled by there being no contact, my apologies. Alan Dawes volunteered to organise the roster list for us but unfortunately ran into a bout of bad health and ended up having to be hospitalised last Sunday. I fear also that the onset of his pneumonia attack had restricted his abilities even earlier than that.

I have been fortunate in being able to persuade Barbara Tocker to stand in his place and she may well have already been in touch with you. If there are matters that you still wish to have clarified please give Barbara (85-348) or I (89—537) a ring.

At present we have some 32 volunteers and more volunteers are quietly making themselves available. If you are able to, through your own contacts,,! help us by organising more volunteers this would be most appreciated. I note that Tui Oaks Motor Inn and Anchorage Motel have agreed to roster staff members on if there should be an emergency i.e. a volunteer being unable to help on their. allotted half day. I am also hopeful that the Launchmans Association and the Accommodation Association will also give us this service. I’ note that the Maori Wardens are also supportive as is the Community Constables Committee.

The trial period of two weeks was started last Friday and it certainly seems to be having it’s intended effect with the Craters area being attended from around 9.OOam to 4.00 - 4.3Opm each day. It does look as though we will certainly be able to cover the holiday period to the 26th May 1991 and I am hopeful that we may well be able to just continue rolling along. At the moment  Al Auto have lent us a campervan as a towing vehicle and Taupo Moana Rotary have lent us their little mobile kiosk. New World have sponsored the initial stock of foodstuffs for sale and other business’ have also been more than helpful with material support. I am also applying to the Trustbank for a grant and am very hopeful that we will be able to have a permanent cellular phone (presently we are using Cohn Hussey’s of Al Autos) by the end of the holidays.

I enclose the present operating instructions in respect of the caravan plus also a note on how to operate the cellular phone (this may change if the model of phone is to change).

Once again my grateful thanks at the way that you personally have responded to the Community’s need and I hope and trust that the operation, having got off to a flying start (albeit with some hiccups), can continue and improve Taupos image.
